What is a PCR Test?

The PCR test involves collecting a sample from the patient's nose and throat using a special swab. The collected material is placed in a special liquid and sent to the laboratory. The RNA of the Covid-19 virus is detected through nucleic acid amplification using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method.

When Should You Take a PCR Test?

During PCR testing for the Covid-19 virus, detection typically occurs within the first 7 days after infection. Beyond this period, the virus may move to the respiratory tract and become undetectable in the nose and throat. However, positive PCR test results can still appear up to 28 days.

For this reason, the timing of the test is crucial. If symptoms are present and the PCR test is negative, it does not rule out the presence of the virus. In such cases, it is recommended to check for antibodies in the blood.

Note: A PCR test for Covid-19 is required for air travel

It is necessary to come for the examination on an empty stomach or 3-4 hours after the last meal (including drinking water, eating, chewing gum, smoking, or rinsing the nose and throat).
