CA 72-4 is a tumor marker used primarily for monitoring gastric and ovarian cancer.

It is almost not synthesized in the tissues of a healthy adult. Elevated CA 72-4 levels are observed in:

  • 40% of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, including stomach cancer
  • 36% of lung cancer cases
  • 24% of ovarian cancer cases
  • In some benign tumors (6.7%), mild elevations may also occur
  • Sample: Blood drawn from a vein.
  • Fasting for at least 4 hours before the test is required.
  • If the patient is receiving high doses of biotin, the test should be taken at least 8 hours after the last dose.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of surgical intervention for gastric cancer, ovarian cancer, and colorectal cancer, followed by monitoring.

Results obtained using different methods should not be compared, as this may lead to incorrect clinical interpretation.
