What is a PCR test?

For this test, a sample is collected from the patient's nose and throat using a special swab. The collected material is placed in a special liquid and sent to the laboratory. The RNA of the Covid-19 virus is detected through the amplification of nucleic acids using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method.

When should you take a PCR test?

In PCR testing for the Covid-19 virus, the virus is usually detected within the first 7 days after infection. After this period, the virus may migrate to the lower respiratory tract and become undetectable in the nasal and throat cavities. However, positive PCR results can occasionally persist for up to 28 days.

For this reason, the timing of the test is crucial. If symptoms are present and the PCR test result is negative, it does not completely rule out the presence of the virus. In such cases, it is recommended to check for antibodies in the blood.

Note: A PCR test for Covid-19 is required for air travel

When coming for the test, you should have an empty stomach or visit at least 3-4 hours after consuming any food, drink (including water), chewing gum, smoking, or rinsing your nose and throat.
