What is Covid-19 PCR analysis?

For the Covid-19 PCR test, a sample is collected from the patient’s nose and throat using a special swab. The sample is then placed in a special solution and sent to the laboratory. Using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method, nucleic acid amplification is performed to detect the RNA of the Covid-19 virus.

When is the Covid-19 PCR test performed?

When testing for Covid-19 using PCR, the virus is usually detected within the first 7 days of infection. Later, the virus may not be detected in the nose and throat as it enters the respiratory tract. However, a positive PCR result for the virus may still occur for up to 28 days.

Therefore, the timing and conditions of the test are very important. If symptoms are present but the PCR test is negative, this does not rule out the presence of the virus. In such cases, checking for antibodies in the blood is recommended.

Note:  A Covid-19 PCR analysis  is required for flights.

When coming for the test, you should have an empty stomach or visit at least 3-4 hours after consuming any food, drink (including water), chewing gum, smoking, or rinsing your nose and throat.
