Snoring is a common issue that occurs during sleep and is often not taken seriously. However, snoring not only disturbs those around you but can also indicate certain health risks. Snoring, which is considered one of the most common sleep disorders in Azerbaijan, is observed in both men and women, and even children.
What Causes Snoring?
Snoring is mainly caused by a narrowing of the airway during sleep. As air passes through the narrowed airway, it creates a vibrating effect, which causes the sound to be produced. However, it can have various causes:
- Nasal congestion (allergies, common cold, sinusitis, etc.)
- Structural problems of the nose and throat (deviation, polyps, adenoids, etc.)
- Overweight – fat deposits around the throat and neck can narrow the airway.
- Alcohol consumption and smoking – cause the throat muscles to relax.
- Sleep disorders and position – sleeping on your back increases the risk of snoring.
- Age factor – as you get older, your throat muscles weaken and snoring becomes more common.
Snoring can sometimes be a sign of a serious condition, such as sleep apnea. During sleep apnea, breathing temporarily stops, which can have negative effects on the cardiovascular system and the brain.
How is snoring treated?
Treatment for snoring depends on its underlying cause. In simple cases, lifestyle changes may be sufficient, while in some instances, medical intervention is required.
- Lifestyle changes – losing excess weight, avoiding alcohol and smoking can reduce the severity of snoring.
- Changing your sleeping position – sleeping on your side rather than on your back keeps your airways open.
- Improving nasal breathing – if allergies or sinusitis are present, appropriate treatment should be carried out. Nasal decongestant sprays may also be helpful.
- Special devices (CPAP or oral appliances) – devices that keep the airway open are used in cases of sleep apnea.
- Surgical treatment – surgical intervention may be applied for anatomical problems such as nasal septum deviation, polyps, or enlarged tonsils.
How to Prevent Snoring Problems?
Prevention is always easier than treatment. Healthy nutrition, an active lifestyle, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, and avoiding bad habits can minimize the risk of snoring. If snoring persists for a long time or is accompanied by breathing pauses, it is important to consult a doctor.
