Helminths-worms
Helminths, commonly known as worms, are organisms that inhabit humans and animals, feeding, reproducing, and disrupting the normal functioning of the body. These organisms, which we may encounter unknowingly in daily life, primarily reside in the intestines, liver, lungs, and, in rare cases, the brain.By absorbing nutrients from the human body, these worms not only interfere with proper nutrition but also release toxins that can cause chronic fatigue, weakened immunity, skin problems, and digestive disorders. In this section, you will find detailed information about helminths and their impact on health.
Ascaris worm is a parasitic worm that lives in the human intestines and can cause serious health problems. Intestinal parasites are among the most common health issues worldwide. They can be transmitted through contaminated water, poorly washed vegetables, undercooked meat, unclean linens, soil, animals, and even through the air.
Most infections caused by intestinal parasites show no symptoms, and diagnosis is usually made through stool examination. Symptoms of intestinal parasites can vary depending on several factors, including the type of parasite, the affected organ, and the parasite load.
Symptoms of giardia worm include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fatigue. Roundworm infections are usually asymptomatic. However, in children, or when present in large numbers, they can lead to anemia, malnutrition, and impaired physical and mental development.
Worm diseases and symptoms of worms:
Symptoms of worm infections include abdominal swelling, nausea, and loss of appetite. Other signs may include:
- Itching around the anus at night
- Anemia, weight loss, and fatigue
- Digestive disturbances
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Stomach pain
- Drooling during sleep
- Pillow wet with saliva upon waking
Worm infection symptoms usually become more noticeable in advanced stages of the infection. These are general symptoms, but they may vary depending on the type of worm. For example, one of the most common worms, Ascaris, can also cause coughing, shortness of breath, blood-stained sputum, and high fever.
Symptoms of worm disease in adults include fatigue, loss of appetite, and weight loss.Symptoms of Giardia worms can be more severe, especially in children. Symptoms of worms in children include restless sleep, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain.
Detection of worms is usually performed through a clinical stool analysis or by identifying worm eggs in the stool. This test generally checks for the presence of worm eggs. Since different worms lay eggs at different times, it is recommended to provide the stool sample 3 times at 2–3 day intervals. In addition, worms can also be detected through the identification of antibodies in the blood. Each type of worm is tested separately. For example, in our clinic, we test for IgG, IgM, and IgA antibodies for Giardia, and IgG antibodies for Ascaris, Trichinella, Toxocara, Opisthorchis, and Echinococcus. Different methods can also be used for detecting Giardia and Ascaris. Giardia antigens can be identified in the stool, while Ascaris can be detected in both stool and sputum using the PCR method.
Ascaris
Ascaris are worm-like parasites that can grow up to 15–20 cm in length. They can live in the human intestine for up to one year. Infection can cause general weakness, abdominal pain, excessive salivation during sleep, and teeth grinding. Ascaris eggs can be transmitted through unwashed hands, contaminated fruits and vegetables, or unsafe water.
Giardia lamblia
Giardia lamblia can survive in the human body for months or even years, continuing to cause harm. Giardiasis may lead to changes in bowel movements, mucus or frothy stools, loss of appetite, increased burning sensations, abdominal bloating, and pain. Skin rashes may also appear. Giardiasis is transmitted through contaminated or unwashed fruits and vegetables and untreated water.
Trichinella
Infection with Trichinella occurs through the consumption of undercooked or raw meat products. Trichinella resides in human muscles, particularly the diaphragm, larynx, tongue, eyes, and intercostal muscles.
Symptoms: Muscle pain, fever, gastrointestinal disturbances, and facial swelling (especially around the eyelids). The infection can lead to poisoning of the body and, in severe cases, cause serious complications such as myocarditis, inflammation of the lungs and kidneys, and other pathologies.
Echinococcus granulosus
This helminth affects the liver and other organs in humans. Echinococcus cysts can range in size from a few millimeters up to 15–20 cm. Most commonly, they develop in the liver and, less frequently, in the lungs, growing gradually over many years. Human infection typically occurs through contact with dogs carrying the parasite’s eggs.
Symptoms: Liver involvement: Pain under the right rib cage, sometimes fever, jaundice, and even ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity). As a result of damage to the lungs, dry cough, shortness of breath, and bloody sputum secretion occur.
Opisthorchiasis
Primarily affects the liver and bile ducts. Humans become infected through consumption of undercooked fish. The infection often develops in a chronic form.
Symptoms: Nausea, inability to digest fatty foods, and a bitter taste in the mouth.
Toxocariasis
Primarily transmitted from dogs to humans; it is not spread from person to person. Infection can occur when hygiene rules are not followed. It mainly causes serious changes in the heart and central nervous system.
Diagnosis: Detected in 95% of cases using the ELISA method for Toxocara IgG (may not be detected in stool).
Enterobiasis (Pinworm) Scraping
Infection with pinworms is called enterobiasis. Their life cycle in the intestines is 28-56 days. Enterobiasis is considered dangerous because it severely damages the immune system. Pinworms can cause inflammation of the intestines (especially around the anus), genitals, and urethral opening. They can also cause appendicitis, including appendicitis. Diagnostics: The material is collected by sticking a transparent adhesive tape to the perianal area without performing hygienic procedures. The procedure is performed immediately after waking up in the morning. After tearing off the adhesive tape, it is attached to a glass container and delivered to the clinic. To protect against worm diseases, it is necessary to follow personal hygiene rules first of all. The most powerful worm medicine helps to completely eliminate worms from the body.
Worm Medication
Worm medication is a general term for antiparasitic drugs used to eliminate parasitic worms (helminths) from the body. These medications target specific types of worm infections and work by neutralizing helminths located in the intestines, liver, or other organs, allowing them to be expelled from the body. The most common types of worms include roundworms, tapeworms, pinworms, and their eggs, each requiring medications with different mechanisms of action. Worm treatment should always be selected under a doctor’s guidance and taken in a dose appropriate for the patient’s age, weight, and type of infection. If symptoms of worm infection are observed in children or adults-such as abdominal pain, weight loss, loss of appetite, or itching around the anal area-a timely diagnosis and proper treatment are essential.Note that you should not take worm medicine without a doctor's recommendation.
Garlic for Worm Treatment
For those who prefer natural remedies, garlic has long been used in traditional medicine as a supportive treatment against intestinal parasites. Garlic contains an active compound called allicin, which can weaken parasites and help eliminate them from the body. It is typically consumed raw before meals or prepared in special garlic solutions for use. While garlic may be beneficial in mild cases and during the early stages of infection, it is not sufficient as a standalone treatment. Natural remedies should always be used under medical supervision and as a complement to prescribed antiparasitic medications.
