Liver cirrhosis is a serious and chronic disease caused by the gradual replacement of healthy liver tissue with scar tissue (fibrosis). This process disrupts the normal function of the liver and prevents the body from carrying out vital functions. Cirrhosis usually develops slowly over the course of several years and may not show clear symptoms in its early stages.
Liver Cirrhosis Symptoms
In the early stages of the disease, symptoms may be mild and vague. However, as the disease progresses, the following symptoms may be observed:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Loss of appetite, weight loss
- Abdominal swelling (ascites)
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
- Bleeding and bruising easily
- Swelling in the legs
- Itching of the skin
- Concentration disorders and memory impairment (hepatic encephalopathy)
What causes liver cirrhosis?
The most common causes of cirrhosis are:
- Prolonged and excessive alcohol consumption
- Chronic hepatitis B and C virus infections
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
- Autoimmune liver diseases
- Hereditary metabolic diseases (e.g., hemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease)
- Drugs or toxins causing long-term damage to the liver
Is liver cirrhosis temporary?
Unfortunately, liver cirrhosis is not completely temporary. Once scar tissue has formed, it does not return to the previous healthy liver tissue. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment, the progression of the disease can be slowed down and complications can be prevented. Treatment is mainly aimed at eliminating the cause, protecting the liver, and improving quality of life.
