Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) – A Marker for Preeclampsia Risk

Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) is a key biomarker for evaluating the risk of preeclampsia—a serious pregnancy complication.

What is Preeclampsia?

Preeclampsia is a severe pregnancy complication characterized by:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Proteinuria (protein in urine)
  • Usually occurring after the 20th week of pregnancy

Affects 5–10% of pregnancies and can lead to severe maternal and fetal complications or even stillbirth.
PlGF testing helps predict preeclampsia 3–5 weeks before clinical onset, allowing early intervention.

  • Blood sample from a vein.
  • No special preparation is required.

Clinical Applications of PlGF Testing

First-Trimester Screening (12–13 Weeks)

  • Combined with PAPP-A (Pregnancy-Associated Plasma Protein-A)
  • Helps detect intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) risk

 Second-Trimester Screening (17–21 Weeks)

  • Assesses placental blood flow
  • Poor circulation in the placenta can lead to severe fetal complications
